Yes. Modern tyres manufactured by well-known brands meet rigorous safety standards, so you have nothing to worry about when choosing tyres from Gladstone Tyres & Autocare. When choosing a tyre, it’s always wise to check the labels for wet grip, fuel efficiency, and noise level ratings. If you’re at all unsure, ask one of our team and we’ll be happy to talk you through the options and advise based on your needs.
It depends on your needs. If you’re going to put your tyres to the test with lots of motorways or high speeds, or a lot of emergency braking, a premium tyre will likely be better able to cope with the increased demands of the higher temperatures. If you’re just driving around town, a more affordable tyre should be fine.
There are several things you can do to make your tyres last longer, regardless of the price.
You can do a simple inspection at home with a 20p coin. Slot the coin in between the tread – if the tread comes up to the inside of the border, your tyres have enough tread on them. If not, it may be worth coming into Gladstone Tyres & Autocare in York for a more thorough, professional tyre inspection. Once the tread is below 3mm, you’ll begin to see longer stopping distances, and once it gets down to 1.6mm, you’ll need to replace the tyres as that is the legal minimum.
Something else to check is the evenness of the wear – if your tyres are more worn in the middle of the tread pattern, you could have been over-inflating them. If they’re worn on one side more than the other, it could be a wheel balancing or alignment issue.
Moderate driving isn’t just good for your fuel economy; it’s also good for your tyres. Driving at calmer speeds with gentler acceleration and braking puts less heat through your tyres, so the compounds last longer. The same applies for corners – go smoothly and your cheap tyres will last longer.
Having your tyres under- or over-inflated makes them wear out sooner, so if you don’t have one, a small electric tyre pump can be a good investment to help your cheap tyres last longer. You can also refill your tyres with air at the fuel station. You can find the correct tyre pressure in your vehicle handbook – the front and back tyres often have slightly different pressure requirements – but if you’re not sure, just pop into our workshop in York and we’ll be happy to help.
